Not only was it the movie of the year, it was the best 'blockbuster' film ever made. And the opening sequence with the Joker arranging for his henchmen to kill each other mid-heist, was surely the greatest opening sequence of all time.
I actually viewed the Dark Knight again this week with a friend who hasn't seen it yet and have some more insights:
I feel the opening scene was almost TOO good. It was probably the best scene in the film.
The "two boats" scenario was a hugely bloated addition to the film, it was like something out of Saw.
This and the two face character's short story arc really bring the film down.
The Nolan's overreached.
I think a lot of the action sequences did a lot of damage as well. They took what could have been a great "Drama/Thriller" back down to cheesy multiplex cinema fodder.

There are a great many memorable scenes, such as when Batman interrogates the Joker Guatanamo Bay style, then when the Joker blows up the police station using a mobile phone surgically inserted into one of his schizophrenic henchmen, the Batman cosplay fanboys who try to take on the crooks themselves, when the Joker dresses up as a nurse and blows up the hospital, and of course the downbeat finale when Batman takes the rap for Harvey Dent's crimes, allowing himself to be pursued by the police as a criminal.

Not really, Saw works on a sadistic level, this did not.

Don't agree.

Perhaps it should have been Batman contemplating the meaning of being Batman for 2+ hours?
I can cite only one flaw with the film; that Maggie Gyllenhaal was hired to play Rachel Dawes, such an ugly actress has no place in any film not titled "The Elephant Woman".
I think the opening sequence was good. A total ripoff of Michael Mann's Heat bank heist sequence.
I think many parts of the film were boring, I only really enjoyed the scenes with Ledger in them.
There will be blood was my choice for movie of 2008.
I said it has something of the feel, but this does not make it a ripoff. Nolan gave an interview where he cites Heat as an inspiration:
Quote:
IGN: Was there ever any concern about including a reporter character in the film since the 1989 Batman film had Alexander Knox in it? Nolan: Well, there's always an element -- there's plenty of other films, whether it's Daredevil or something, where reporters come into it and there's a reason for it. The reason being, particularly in the case of The Dark Knight, we're attempting to tell a very large, city story or the story of a city. In the same way that, I don't know, Michael Mann's films, like Heat or something. That was sort of an inspiration. If you want to take on Gotham, you want to give Gotham a kind of weight and breadth and depth in there. So you wind up dealing with the political figures, the media figures. That's part of the whole fabric of how a city is bound together.
The poll is officially over and The Dark Knight was not the movie of the year. It seems people agree with me that "There will be blood" was the film of the year.
If art is to be measured by democratic opinion, then we must admit that works such as "Titanic", Brian Singer's superhero films, various films featuring elves, etc. are the greatest works of art at all.
No disputing this.

Still Disagree

Thoughts?
I'm furious!
This must not be allowed.

Total ripoff?
Did the gang kill each other during the heist in Heat? Or place handgrenades in the hands of the bank customers?
I have given my opinion on that debacle here.
Yes, A ripoff.
You've already agreed in the past that it had striking similarities to Heat.
Nolan has addressed this matter.
I said it has something of the feel, but this does not make it a ripoff. Nolan gave an interview where he cites Heat as an inspiration:

I'm proud of Nolan for admitting it.
the people have spoken.

better than they could have been
look at some of the other super hero films - and that 3rd one Crapner did. I thought the 2nd was okay.
