Movie Club V

Movie club is proud to announce the next title!
This fortnight Tigger_ brings us a powerhouse feature for the next Movie Club installment.

"Tell No One" (Ne le dis à personne) is a 2006 French thriller directed by Guillaume Canet and based on the novel of the same name by Harlan Coben. It was written by Guillame Canet and Philippe Lefèbvre and stars François Cluzet.

Synopsis:
“Alex Beck (Cluzet) is a doctor who has slowly been putting his life back together after his wife Margot was murdered by a serial killer. Eight years on, Alex is doing well enough until he finds himself implicated in the murder of two people, with plenty of evidence pointing to him as the killer even though he knows nothing of the crimes. The same day, Alex receives an e-mail that appears to be from Margot (Marie-Josée Croze), which includes a link to a live surveillance video clip that features his late wife looking alive and well”

Nearly there.

My acquisition of this promising film is at 90%, unfortunately it has slowed a bit the last few days, but hopefully it will finish tonight, and I shall deliver my verdict.

count me out

I shant be participating after Tell No One.

Brilliance!

Movie Club is in it's golden age!

Tigger_'s picture

No valid reason

Why are you leaving? Because others are participating and you can not foist your obsessions onto them?

LamontCranston's picture

Nope

Venkman has hijacked it for the purposes of trolling.
And my next film would have been The Bad Sleep Well.

What on earth are these obsessions you speak of? Are they anything like Venkmans compulsion to troll?

Ban

Lamontcranston is officially banned from Movie Club for the crime of trolling Movie Club. This ban is effective until further notice.

LamontCranston's picture

illogical

You can not ban someone who says they are not participating. Furthermore, to accuse me of trolling, when I have already accused you, shows your hand.

What about HD?

This film does not appear to be available in HD, so is very strongly discouraged anyway.

If on the other hand you had chosen Kurosawa's "Ran", which is available in HD, it would be very welcome.

LamontCranston's picture

perhaps, but it doesn't matter now

I didn't want to select one his jidaigeki films, and I remember you said you hadn't seen this. A rip of the Criterion release would have been fine.

Tigger_'s picture

Criterion bluray

Criterion are releasing Bluray now, so that will happen in due course. In the meantime be patient and select from the already very impressive offerings to be found in HD.

Originally it was HD Movie

Originally it was HD Movie Club, but you cried, and Venkman generously permitted SD films to accommodate your lower standards, above my protests. This was a terrible mistake as soon became apparent with Get Carter. Now you are gone it will be HD all the way!

Tigger_'s picture

Ironic

Ironically, if you had been patient and waited your turn, Bad Sleep Well may have been out by then on Bluray.

My Review

I have now watched 'Tell No One', so shall now share my opinions.

Mild spoilers follow, so do not read just yet if you have not already watched it:

An innocent everyday Joe finds himself embroiled in a massive conspiracy, of the sort that everyone around him knows something about except him, and this conspiracy has been in operation for over eight years now, and though largely dormant, shifts into gear again when some new evidence appears that threatens the conspiracy. After many confusing encounters, the protagonist gradually pieces together not only what is going on now, but what really happened eight years ago. Eventually the trail leads him full circle back to the person you would least suspect, who then fills in all the details via monologue and flashback. And it turns out that it is a very elaborate conspiracy indeed. Usually with films like this where the conspirators have laid down such a complex plan to conceal the truth, when you finally get to that truth it had better be pretty good; something like reality is an invention of the Freemasons, or John Wilkes Booth is a centenarian who shot Kennedy and John Lennon too. But when we finally get to the truth, it is somewhat unspectacular, plausible, but not quite the pay off one would hope for after such a build up. Also even though the plot elements as far as I remember all seem to fit by the end, given the circumstances that gave birth to the conspiracy, one could easily think of a less elaborate way to pursue their goals with a higher probability of success. The film ends happily for our protagonist, albeit you wonder if this happiness will be impeded by the rather serious psychological scarring that he must have accumulated over the last eight years. Counselling might not be a bad idea.

I give it three stars.

Review

I found this film fairly enjoyable. A little too long, but not boring. The middle section of the film became a bit convoluted.
I was more impressed with some of the cinematography. Excellent use of steadycam and hand held stylings.
Not sure why all the music in the film was mixed so low, seemed a bit odd to me.
I agree with Tigger's comments that the ending was a bit of a let down. I did enjoy the "twist" moment. Found that quite good. I was puzzled and a little suspicious in the scene where the audio from the wiretap dropped out for a few seconds and the eventual twist reassured me that my instincts were correct.
All in all I was impressed, U2 on the soundtrack was a terrible mistake. Jeff Buckley earlier in the film was a better choice.
I give it 3 stars as well.
