This is of course a

This is of course a completely reprehensible record. But I should not be too surprised, I lost all faith in humanity when Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" travesty performed so well, so the public are no judge of anything.

However when inflation is taken into account then the situation is not so depressing, as is revealed here: http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

Avatar will not surpass Gone With the Wind.

Sustained value

Don't forget that Gone with the Wind was re-released in 1941, 1942, 1954, 1961, 1967, and 1974. And would continue to do well in the small releases that go on now days; as well as a steady earner on laserdisc, dvd, and now bluray releases. Truly an investment that has been paying back for decades.
Can any of us even name 5 blockbusters made 5 years ago?
